Melbourne's Munt - initially established in 2016 as a solo studio project, has gone through several phases since the bands incarnation. From solo project to band, lineup changes, pandemic and isolation, to the expansion and maturation of their sound.
First releasing the CAGE demo in 2016, then gaining a full lineup, Munt released two singles in 2018: STRIGES and SEEDS OF THE MACHINE. Then in 2019 the first of two EPs: TOWARDS EXTINCTION, and a split record with Cordell in 2020 as an intermission produced during the pandemic. The bands efforts eventually culminated with their acclaimed second EP - PAIN OUROBOROS in 2023.
One thing consistent about Munt, they continue to play a hard-to-pin-down, manic, and modern blend of death, black and sludge metal driven by the ferocity of grindcore, hardcore and occasional chaotic twists.
Now in 2024, upon the release of 2 new singles THE CURSE OF FRAILTY and SOMAPSYCHOSIS, the band continues to grow and demonstrate this expanding sound to audiences, still simplified as BLACK GRINDING DEATH.

HISTORY
Munt was originally started by guitarist David "Spud" Robertson as a solo/collaborative studio project in 2016. Having then relocated to Melbourne, Australia from Scotland, an idea formed to release a self-produced EP with collaborative efforts from musicians around the globe. The end result was an EP titled THE MIND IS A CAGE, which was released in October 2016 featuring several guest vocalists on each song. Drums were performed and recorded by George Henry (Gendo Ikari) in Glasgow, with all main vocals, guitar, bass, and production was carried out in Melbourne by Spud.
Over the course of the next 2 years Spud would begin to rehearse with local musicians, and new music started to form. In 2018, with a full band, Munt began recording with Jamie Marinos (Pridelands) and released 2 stand alone singles STRIGES and SEEDS OF THE MACHINE. Live shows in Australia had then begun...
In 2019 Munt settled on a permanent formation of members featuring Ronnie Dixon (bass), Sol Laskowski (guitar), Tim Richmond (vocals), Seb Alcock (drums) and Spud (guitar/vocals) rounding out the band. They recorded their debut EP TOWARDS EXTINCTION which was released in August 2019. Munt embarked on an east coast tour of Australia in support of the release as well as getting the opportunity to support international acts such as HEXIS and PRIMITIVE MAN.
As 2020 began and the world faced a global pandemic, and with the departure of drummer Seb, the band found themselves isolated from each other for the best part of the next year. However they used the time to begin writing for what would become the next release. A false start of the return of live music in 2021 cancelled several planned shows with various lockdown measures coming back into place.
As the world started putting the pandemic turmoil behind us in 2022, Munt entered Danger Tone Studios in Melbourne with Luke Walton (Blunt Shovel, BloodDuster, King Parrot) at the helm to engineer and produce the next release. The band also welcomed new drummer Jared Roberts (Desecrator, Alarum) at this point, and got out within Australia for a handful of shows, road-testing the new material.
In 2023, PAIN OUROBOROS was born, a 5 track EP that was released to to acclaim, along with 2 killer music videos. Munt saw out the year playing a number of shows - with the highlight being a support slot for BEHEMOTH on their 2023 Aussie tour run.
Now we have THE CURSE OF FRAILTYand SOMAPSYCHOSIS, 2 new singles in 2024 showcasing Munt’s sharp, refined songwriting, as well as their ability to create scathing riffs and endless chaos in their brand of BLACK GRINDING DEATH.
